In the last 24 hours two elderly persons, K. Satyanarayana (76) and G. Surya Rao (81), succumbed to acute renal failure after a fortnight-long battle, attributed to their consumption of adulterated milk in Rajamahendravaram City.

The total number of deaths linked to the consumption of adulterated milk reached seven on Tuesday. In a health bulletin issued on Tuesday, (March 3), East Godavari District Collector Kirthi Chekuri has claimed; “As many as 13 patients, including three infants, are still battling for life with acute renal failure. Ten of them are on ventilation support.”

Between February 16 and 18, at least 20 persons, mostly elderly and infants, suffered anuria and acute renal failure after they consumed adulterated milk supplied by the same milk vendor.

By Tuesday, Fomeprazole injection, an antidote for ethylene glycol poisoning, which prevents acute renal failure was administered to eight patients. However, it has not been administered to the three infants— five-month-old M. Ruhanya, Jai Krith Raj and two-year-old D. Rithik, whose health condition remains critical.

Meanwhile, the reports of the various tests conducted by multiple agencies are yet to conclude the substances used in the adulteration of milk.
