Minister for Local Self Governments K.M. Shaji has urged students to view debates as a means to promote understanding, uphold human values, and build a more peaceful and inclusive world, rather than as contests to defeat opponents.
Inaugurating the Global Debaters Summit: All Kerala Model United Nations (GDSMUN) at Peace Public School, Kottakkal, on Saturday (July 11), Mr. Shaji stressed the importance of diversity and inclusive dialogue in shaping a better society.
“Just as the seven colours of the rainbow come together to create a beautiful spectrum, every individual contributes a unique voice and perspective to society. It is this diversity that strengthens humanity. Never hesitate to express your ideas,” he said.
More than 350 students from schools across Kerala participated in the summit, where they debated global issues and developed skills in diplomacy, leadership, critical thinking, negotiation and public speaking through a simulated United Nations platform.
The delegates represented committees modelled on UNESCO, UNICEF, the United Nations General Assembly, and the Skittles Council, discussing contemporary global challenges, negotiating resolutions and engaging in structured diplomatic sessions.
P.A. Kabir, chairman of Almas Group of Institutions, presided over the inaugural function. School principal M. Jouhar welcomed the gathering, while Benchmarks International School principal K. Unnikrishnan delivered the keynote address.
Malappuram Sahodaya School Complex president M. Abdul Nasser inaugurated the valedictory function. Sweety S. Pulikkottil and Gopakumar K. distributed awards to outstanding delegates. GDSMUN director Ranjith Kurup coordinated the programme.
