Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the first train on Bairabi-Sairang new line in Mizoram on September 13. The train will pass through the hilly terrain dotted with tunnels, road over bridges and road under bridges and reach Sairang village, 20 kms away from Mizoram capital. With this, the Mizo tribes will finally get rail connectivity with the rest of the country.
South Central Railway (SCR) Chief Public Relations Officer A. Sridhar and Northeast Frontier Railway Public Relations Officer Nilanjan Deb, who visited Sairang railway station, said the Railways will operate Sairang (Aizawl)-Delhi Rajdhani Express, Sairang-Guwahati Express and Sairang-Kolkata Express on the new line.
“Mr. Modi will flag off the three trains during his visit to Mizoram on Saturday. The trains connect Mizoram with Delhi, Assam and Kolkata. The people of Mizoram will have better access to education institutions, hospitals and markets with the network provided by the Railways,” Mr. Sridhar added.
The Mizo tribes constitute about 80% of Mizoram’s population. The new railway project is expected to enhance connectivity and improve the transportation of food grains, vegetables and other essentials to the tribespeople on hills, said David, a soldier with the Assam Rifles.
“The 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway project was proposed some 30 years ago, and works began eleven years back. The new railway line will be helpful for students, businesspersons and the farmers of northeast States,” said Nasrin, a nursing student.
