Munetaka Murakami has become one of the biggest names on the Boston Red Sox radar as his MLB decision window slowly closes. With just days left before teams must act, Boston is quietly being discussed as a strong landing spot for the Japanese star.
The Red Sox are still searching for offense, and Murakami fits a clear need.At the same time, Boston is also checking the bullpen market. Former Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Evan Phillips is now available, and league insiders say the Red Sox are showing real interest. Together, these two moves could shape Boston’s offseason direction.Munetaka Murakami linked to Boston Red Sox as December 22 deadline approaches
On Monday, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that the Boston Red Sox would be a “perfect universe” fit for Murakami.Nightengale explained that Boston still needs power in the lineup, especially with Alex Bregman remaining unsigned deep into December. Murakami, who plays corner infield, could fill that role if Bregman does not return.Murakami has hit 265 home runs in Japan and is known for his power from the left side.
Boston signed Masataka Yoshida to a five-year, $90 million deal in 2023, and Murakami could land a similar contract.
However, MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal said Murakami’s market has been quiet.“No one seems to know who is on him or what the money looks like,” Rosenthal said on MLB Network. “But I do expect him to be with a major-league club next season.”Evan Phillips became a free agent after the Los Angeles Dodgers non-tendered him at the end of the season. His one-year arbitration deal worth $6.1 million was voided as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. On Monday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reported that Phillips is seeking a one-year contract, not a long-term rehab deal. Healey added that the Boston Red Sox are among the teams showing interest.Phillips was elite in 2022 with a 1.14 ERA and remained solid in 2023. Injuries limited him last season, but teams still see upside. If healthy, Phillips could strengthen a bullpen that Boston wants to stabilize before Opening Day.Also Read: MLB Trade Rumors: Boston Red Sox Eye Chris Martin Comeback As Yankees And Orioles Step Up Push For Michael King
