The Los Angeles Dodgers strengthened their bullpen during the 2026 offseason by signing closer Edwin Diaz to a three-year, $69 million contract. The deal was finalized in December 2025 after the Dodgers won the World Series but dealt with an inconsistent bullpen during the season. The signing directly addresses that issue. With Diaz joining a roster that already includes players such as Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers added a proven late-inning option. The move also affected betting markets, where Los Angeles opened the 2026 season as the World Series favorite with +225 odds.

Edwin Diaz's Contract details and structure

Edwin Diaz, 31, opted out of the final $38 million remaining on his previous contract with the New York Mets to enter free agency.

The Dodgers signed him to a three-year deal worth $69 million with several deferred payments.

The contract includes a $9 million signing bonus and a $14 million base salary for the 2026 season. Of that salary, $4.5 million will be deferred. Diaz will earn $23 million in both 2027 and 2028, with $4.5 million deferred each year. The deal also includes a conditional club option for the 2029 season worth $6.5 million plus incentives tied to saves.

Because the Dodgers are repeat luxury-tax payers, the contract creates a competitive balance tax hit of about $44.3 million in 2026.

What the signing means for both teams

The Los Angeles Dodgers add a closer who has spent years handling ninth-inning duties. He joins a bullpen that includes Tanner Scott, Alex Vesia, Blake Treinen, and Brusdar Graterol. The group gives Los Angeles several late-inning options. For Diaz, the move places him on a team expected to contend again.

The Mets had offered him a $66 million contract but were unable to complete a new deal. After Diaz declined their qualifying offer, the Mets turned to Devin Williams instead. The contract also set a new market level for relievers. Diaz’s representatives at Wasserman negotiated an average annual value of $23 million.

Edwin Diaz’s recent performance

Edwin Diaz entered free agency following a strong 2025 season. He posted a 1.63 ERA while recording 28 saves.

His strikeout rate was 38 percent, and he averaged 13.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Possible benefits and risks

For the Los Angeles Dodgers, the signing strengthens the bullpen. Edwin Diaz gives the team a clear option in the ninth inning and adds depth to the relief group. There are also risks. Diaz previously dealt with a knee injury, and the contract adds to the Dodgers’ luxury-tax bill. There could also be role overlap with Scott, who recorded 23 saves in 2025.Also read: MLB trade rumors: Houston Astros predicted to chase $22 million Milwaukee Brewers power duo in a blockbuster deal for Isaac ParedesFor Edwin Diaz, the contract provides a higher salary and a chance to play for a team expected to compete for another title.
