Security forces have stepped up their anti-terror operation in the snow-covered Chatroo area of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir, as they continue efforts to track down three Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists believed to be hiding in the region, officials said on Friday.
As part of security measures, mobile internet services remain suspended in parts of the district. Officials said internet access has been shut within a six-kilometre radius of Singhpora, Chingam and Chatroo. The suspension has now been extended till 11.59 pm on January 30, following an order issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department.
The anti-terror operation began on January 18 and initially led to a fierce encounter in the Sonnar forest area near Mandral-Singhpora. In the gunfight, one paratrooper was killed and seven other soldiers were injured. The terrorists managed to escape, taking advantage of dense forest cover and difficult terrain.
Despite heavy snowfall of over two feet in the area, security forces have continued their search. Two more encounters were reported — one at Mali Dana top on January 22 and another at Janseer-Kandiwar on January 25. However, in both instances, the terrorists slipped deeper into the forest.
Officials said mobile internet services were first suspended in the area on January 23. The move was ordered by the Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, who is the authorised officer under the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024. Authorities said the decision was taken to stop high-speed mobile data from being misused by anti-national elements, which could disrupt public order.
Meanwhile, security forces have also launched a separate search operation in the Pajja Morh, Nabana top and nearby areas of Surankote in Poonch district, following inputs about the presence of two suspected persons. No contact has been established so far, officials said, adding that the operation was still underway at the time of the last reports.
Officials said the situation continues to be closely monitored as operations remain active across the region.
