A flood relief and disaster management mock drill on the Ghaghra River in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich took an unexpected turn when a woman jumped into the river, prompting a real-life rescue operation, reported PTI. Initially, people present at the site mistook the incident as part of the exercise, officials said on Friday.
According to police, the 35-year-old woman, a resident of the Jarwal Road area, jumped into the river from Sanjay Setu at around 2 pm on Thursday while the mock drill was being conducted. The exercise involved officials, divers and local boatmen.
Witnesses first believed the woman’s jump was a planned component of the drill. However, rescue personnel soon realised that she was attempting to end her life and immediately launched a rescue operation.
Divers and boatmen rushed into action, safely pulling the woman from the river and bringing her back to shore in a boat. She was later admitted to a community health centre for treatment.
Jarwal Road Station House Officer Santosh Kumar Singh said preliminary investigation indicates that the woman took the extreme step due to a family dispute and alleged harassment.
Police said the woman told investigators that her husband had gone to Saudi Arabia for work after their marriage. Over time, he reportedly reduced contact with her and stopped sending financial support. She also alleged that her in-laws forced her to leave the house.
Based on her complaint, police have registered a case against her husband and father-in-law under relevant sections, including those related to harassment of a woman. While the husband is currently abroad, the father-in-law has been questioned, police added.
