Madurai: Confederation of Indian Industries’ youth wing and Young Indians, organised a mock parliament session in Madurai over the weekend, showcasing high school students’ legislative-style debate on public issues.From rising petrol prices to the falling rupee value in relation to the US dollar, students debated on policy issues, made arguments and responded on the floor. After delivering 90-second speeches on their assigned constituencies, the students, who took on the role of MPs, raised questions on topics given to them on the spot and discussed possible solutions.Young Indians Madurai chapter chair Vikranth Karmegam said Madurai recorded the second highest participation for the mock parliament session this year, after Jaipur. Top performers from this round will be shortlisted for the state-level session scheduled in Erode later this year.Two local TVK MLAs A Kallanai and M M Gopison, who attended the event, urged CII to conduct many such events which would help reshape Madurai’s image and position the city as a platform for youth leadership and civic engagement.
