Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launching his election campaign for the Assam assembly polls on Wednesday, warned voters to remain vigilant against Congress, accusing the party of plotting to introduce a “dangerous law” in the state.Modi referred to the Communal Violence Bill that the UPA govt had attempted to implement before the 2014 elections. “In that bill, the majority community was held responsible for riots while minorities were always considered victims. It was communal in itself. That is why BJP and NDA fought hard and did not allow it to pass in Parliament,” Modi said while campaigning at Gogamukh in Dhemaji district.“You have liberated Assam from Congress’s misrule. But you have to remain very vigilant.
Congress is now engaged in playing a completely different game. Assam Congress leaders are talking about making a dangerous law,” Modi said.Saying that he wants to “expose this ploy of Congress,” Modi said, that before the 2014 elections, the Congress-led central government had attempted to make a communal violence law whose purpose was appeasement of their committed vote bank.“Now, after 12 years, Congress is announcing plans to bring the same kind of law in Assam.
And this is not my allegation — Congress leaders themselves are openly making these announcements. It is absolutely clear that Congress can do anything now to gain power,” Modi said, adding that Congress has now become “Muslim League and Maoist Congress.”“Before Independence, Muslim League played the game of dividing the country. The same work Congress is doing today,” he said.“Congress wants to protect foreigners in Assam and wants to make the original sons and daughters of Assam a minority.
We are all witnessing this crisis in many districts of Assam,” Modi said.Modi further accused Congress of “stabbing Ambedkar’s Constitution”, prioritising family interests over public welfare, and compromising Assam’s ‘aatma’, ‘shaan’, ‘pehchan’, and ‘suraksha’.Highlighting BJP’s record, Modi cited land pattas for tea workers, eviction of encroachers from sattra and temple lands, five bridges over the Brahmaputra in 10 years compared to Congress’s three in six decades, and flood control projects worth Rs 1,800 crore.
He pointed to Jagiroad’s semiconductor facility as proof of Assam’s new industrial identity. The BJP manifesto promises higher daily wages for tea workers, more pucca houses, jobs, and self-employment opportunities. Modi asserted that the “double-engine govt” will ensure 40 lakh women become ‘lakhpati’ and safeguard tribals under the Sixth Schedule, while implementing the Uniform Civil Code.Framing the election as a choice between “Vikas and Virasat”, Modi declared that BJP would score a hat trick in Assam, while Congress was headed for “a century of defeats”.
