Mohamed Salah says he's disappointed at having been consigned to the bench despite doing "so much for the club"

Mohamed Salah has openly criticised Liverpool manager Arne Slot, suggesting that his time at Anfield could be coming to an end. The Egyptian forward claimed he has been “thrown under the bus" during the team’s recent poor run of form. Salah was left on the bench for the third consecutive game in Liverpool’s 3-3 draw against Leeds on Saturday and was not brought on as a substitute.
Salah, who will depart for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after next weekend’s home match against Brighton, hinted that this could be his final appearance in a Liverpool shirt.
“I’m very, very disappointed. I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season," Salah told reporters at Elland Road. “Now I’m sitting on the bench and I don’t know why. It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. It is very clear that someone wants me to take the blame."
Salah expressed his frustration over unfulfilled promises made to him during the summer. “I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I am on the bench for three games, so I can’t say they keep the promise. I always had a good relationship with the manager, and suddenly, we don’t have any relationship. It seems someone doesn’t want me at the club."
Despite his feelings, Salah reaffirmed his love for Liverpool. “This club, I always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much, I will always do. I called my mum yesterday and said, ‘Come to the Brighton game.’ I don’t know if I am going to play or not, but I am going to enjoy it."
Salah, who is Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer with 250 goals in 420 appearances, has won two Premier League titles and the Champions League since joining from Roma in 2017. However, he has struggled this season, scoring just five times in 19 appearances.
Liverpool’s form has also suffered, with Slot’s team winning just two of their last 10 Premier League games and dropping to eighth in the table. Salah was a regular starter until last weekend’s 2-0 win at West Ham but was introduced off the bench during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Sunderland to little effect.
Slot defended his decision to leave Salah on the bench at Elland Road. “It was more about controlling the game [at 3-2] and we didn’t need a goal," said Slot. “Normally when you need a goal, like last week against Sunderland, I brought Mo on."
Speculation about Salah’s future has been fuelled by interest from the Saudi Pro League, which could offer an escape route from Anfield during the January transfer window. Salah signed a lucrative new two-year contract in April after playing a pivotal role in Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.
