Mohan Bhagwat Highlights Importance Of Coexistence, Recalls SC Verdict On Stray Dogs

Referring to Supreme Court's recent verdict on the issue of stray dogs, Mohan Bhagwat said there were extreme reactions both in support and opposition.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday highlighted the importance of coexistence and said that humans, animals and nature must live in harmony. He added that society needs to seriously deliberate on how to ensure balanced coexistence.

Bhagwat was speaking at a ‘National Symposium on the Role of Canine in One Health: Building Partnership and Resolving Challenges’ jointly organised in Nagpur by the Indian Society for Advancement of Canine Practice, and the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU).

Referring to a recent Supreme Court verdict on the issue of stray dogs, he said there were extreme reactions both in support and opposition, and suggested that alternative approaches could be explored to address contentious issues.

“Human beings will have to think about how to live together with everyone. Recently, a decision was made regarding dogs, and there was a lot of uproar in Delhi. There were two views in society, one said kill all the dogs, and the other said do not touch the dogs at all. So if humans have to live alongside dogs, they must think about how to do so," the RSS chief said.

Bhagwat further talked about the veterinary practitioners in India and said that it had played a significant role to play in the country’s economic growth, and urged the practitioners to broaden their outlook beyond the conventional responsibilities.

In November last year, the Supreme Court took note of the rising cases of dog bites within institutional areas like educational institutions, hospitals and railway stations and directed relocation of stray canines to designated shelters after due sterilisation and vaccination.
