Mom poisons toddler after tiff with husband

Meerut: A two-year-old girl died after a 23-year-old woman allegedly fed pesticide to her daughters and consumed it herself following an argument with her husband in Barmadpur village of Bulandshahr’s Gulawathi area on Sunday afternoon.Police said Sonika wanted to go to the Gulawathi market, but her husband Harendra Kumar asked her to wait until he finished work. The couple allegedly had an argument, after which Harendra left for the fields to spray pesticide.Soon after, Sonika allegedly gave pesticide kept at home to her daughters — Arshi, 2, and 10-month-old Dolly — and then consumed herself. She later called a relative and informed them about the incident.The three were rushed to a private hospital in Gulawathi and later referred to Meerut as their condition was critical. Arshi died during treatment, while Sonika and Dolly are recovering, police said.Mandi outpost in-charge Upendra Yadav said the toddler’s body was sent for postmortem in Meerut.“No formal complaint has been received. Further action will depend on the family’s complaint and the findings of the investigation,” Yadav said.Police said Harendra works at a factory in Kasna, Greater Noida. The couple got married about four years ago.
