Monsoon arrived but rain didn’t, Telangana ends June with 12% rainfall deficit

Dark clouds gathered over Hyderabad on several afternoons and evenings this (2026) June, but more often than not they passed without much rain. Apart from the June 9 downpour that inundated roads and triggered massive traffic snarls, the city saw only a few scattered showers while afternoons remained warm and humid. The pattern reflected across Telangana, which ended the first month of the southwest monsoon with a 12% rainfall deficit, while Hyderabad recorded rainfall 4% below normal, according to Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data.

The southwest monsoon entered Telangana on June 8 and, after a prolonged pause in its advance, covered the entire State on June 23.

115.3 mm against normal 130.3 mm

TGPDS data for June revealed that from June 1 to June 30, Telangana received 115.3 mm of rainfall against the normal 130.3 mm. Hyderabad too finished the month below normal, receiving 103 mm against the expected 107.4 mm. Of the 33 districts, only four recorded excess rainfall, 12 remained in the normal category, 16 ended the month with deficient rainfall and Hanumakonda emerged as the only district in the large deficient category, recording 40.9 mm against its normal of 142.1 mm, a shortfall of 71%.

224 mandals under deficient rainfall category

The spatial imbalance also reflected at the mandal level. Of Telangana’s 621 mandals, 224 fell under the deficient rainfall category and another 84 were classified as large deficient. Only 76 mandals recorded excess rainfall, while 188 remained in the normal category.

Within the Hyderabad urban agglomeration comprising Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC), cumulative rainfall stood at 101.4 mm against the normal 107.3 mm, translating into a 5% deficit. Although Hyderabad district itself remained in the normal category with a 4% shortfall, neighbouring Medchal Malkajgiri district reported a deficit of 41%.

Despite the rainfall deficit, June this year fared better than the corresponding month last year. Telangana had received only 104.2 mm of rainfall during June 2025, compared with 115.3 mm this year, representing an 11% improvement over the previous year, although still below the long-term average.

Telangana’s receives annual rainfall of 923.8 mm

The southwest monsoon season, which runs from June to September, typically accounts for about 740.6 mm (80%) of Telangana’s annual rainfall of 923.8 mm. June, the first month of the season, normally receives 130.3 mm of rain. With July and August historically being the wettest months, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the State can overcome the current 12% rainfall deficit.
