Drenched: People hurry to their destinations in Dharwad on Monday
Dharwad: Moderate to heavy rain lashed Dharwad district, including the twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad, throughout Monday as the southwest monsoon made a strong comeback, bringing much-needed relief to farmers after a prolonged dry spell. The rain, which began late on Sunday night, continued across all taluks of the district. While Hubballi witnessed a few intense spells, Dharwad city and the remaining taluks received steady rainfall from early morning until evening. The persistent showers disrupted normal life, causing inconvenience to commuters, students and office-goers. Despite the disruption, rain has raised hopes among farmers, whose standing crops had come under stress due to inadequate rain in June.According to the district disaster management authority, all taluks recorded above-normal rain on July 5 and 6. During the past seven days, the district received a cumulative rain of 35.8mm against the normal average of 30.4mm, indicating a significant improvement. The fresh spell has also rejuvenated the district’s two major streams, Bennihalla and Tupparihalla, following substantial rainfall in their catchment areas, resulting in a steady rise in water flow.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Dharwad district, forecasting moderate to heavy rain over the next two days. District authorities are closely monitoring the situation as water levels in the streams continue to rise, and have urged the public to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas near the water bodies.
