Monsoon Pauses Over City, Remains Active Across Vidarbha

Nagpur: After lashing Nagpur city over the past week, the southwest monsoon has taken a pause. Several areas remained dry on Monday while a few localities witnessed only light showers in last couple of days.

But several parts of Vidarbha witnessed good showers, helping further reduce the rainfall deficit in the region.As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Nagpur recorded no rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Monday. The city’s maximum temperature rose sharply by 4.1°C over the previous day to 33.6°C, while the minimum temperature settled at 22.8°C, causing warm and humid conditions.Gondia emerged as the wettest district, recording 72.8 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30am, followed by Washim with 13 mm, Bramhapuri 9.6 mm, Bhandara 7 mm, Gadchiroli 5.6 mm, Chandrapur 1 mm, Akola 0.8 mm, while Amravati received 1 mm between 8.30am and 5.30pm.

Most other districts remained largely dry during the day.After below normal rainfall in June, monsoon gained pace in July. Rivers, reservoirs and groundwater levels have received a much-needed boost.IMD has forecast widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across Nagpur and other districts of Vidarbha on Tuesday and has issued a yellow alert for the region. The weather department has warned of moderate rainfall, lightning and gusty winds at isolated places.With rainfall becoming highly localised in recent days, questions remain whether Nagpur city will receive heavy showers or scattered rain, while monsoon remains more active in rural areas and neighbouring districts.
