Months after his scathing criticism of Jasleen Royal's opening performance for Coldplay in India sparked widespread debate, singer-composer Vishal Dadlani has publicly apologised to the musician on the sets of Indian Idol. The emotional moment, which ended with the two sharing a hug, comes at a time when Royal is basking in the success of her latest track, Inaam, featuring rapper Badshah. Reacting to the clip shared on Instagram by Royal's manager Yash Sanjeev Badwe, Badshah dropped a heart emoji and wrote, "Such a beautiful moment."Speaking on the show, Dadlani admitted that his remarks during the controversy had crossed a line. "I have known Jasleen for a long time and last year we had a controversy. I said more than I should have, and I shouldn't have said it that way because I truly admire Jasleen's compositions," he said. Explaining that his criticism was intended for the organisers rather than the artiste, Dadlani added that he regretted the manner in which he expressed himself.
"We don't have enough female composers in our industry, and I am the last person who would want to discourage someone doing such good work. I want to publicly apologise. It must be done."A visibly emotional Jasleen Royal accepted the apology, revealing that Dadlani had always been a mentor to her. "I always considered you a mentor and a friend. I would call you for advice on little things, so when it happened, it hurt me.
But it's okay, we all have our own journeys. That's really big of you," she said before embracing him on stage. The apology brings closure to a controversy that began in January 2025, when Royal opened for Coldplay during the band's India tour. While the performance received mixed reactions online, Dadlani's comments drew particular attention after he described it as "embarrassing" and questioned the music industry's choice of performers for such a large platform. His remarks had triggered widespread debate on social media, with many coming out in support of Royal while others echoed his criticism.
The public reconciliation now marks a notable end to one of the industry's most talked-about disagreements.
