Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo called for stricter punishment for racial abuse following the lastest episode of the endemic in the Premier League as the Ghanaian was subject to racist slurs during his side’s PL opener against Liverpool last week.

Semenyo netted both goals in his side’s 2-4 defeat to champions Liverpool; however, the game was marred by racial abuse hurled at the 25-year-old from a fan, who was identified and ejected from the game.

“Whatever the Premier League are doing, it’s not enough and there’s more that needs to be done," the Bournemouth star said opening up on the matter for the first time since the incident.

“It could be jail time, it could be bans from stadiums for a lifetime, it could be anything along the lines of that, but I feel like there has to be something else," he said.

“I feel like in this day and age it just doesn’t make sense and we want to know why it keeps happening. It was pretty painful to hear," Semenyo added.

He recollected what he opened up on the ordeal and the online abuse he had to deal with subsequently. He questioned the rationale behind such behaviour and how it can have an adverse impact on players.

“I got back on the coach and I was just going through my messages. I wanted to reply back to family and friends, to be honest and then it obviously popped across the screen on Instagram, I was getting racially abused as well," he said in a shocking revelation.

“Someone has felt the need to come online and do that, so that made me angry, to be honest. Why would you want to do that?"

Bournemouth take on Wolves at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday in their second PL outing of the nascent season.
