Bengaluru mother and teen daughter found dead in Whitefield, police suspect murder suicide amid family financial stress, two FIRs filed as probe continues.

Two separate FIRs have been registered—one filed by Chandrashekhar alleging that his wife killed their daughter, and another by Suvarna’s brother Manjunath.
In a tragic incident in Bengaluru, a 45-year-old woman and her teenage daughter were found dead in what police suspect is a case of murder followed by suicide in the Immadihalli area of Whitefield.
The deceased have been identified as Suvarna (45), a homemaker, and her daughter Karunya (14). Police said they received information around 11 am on Tuesday, following which officers from Whitefield Police Station and the Scene of Crime (SOCO) team rushed to the residence.
Preliminary forensic findings suggest that Suvarna allegedly smothered her daughter to death inside a room before ending her own life by hanging from a ceiling fan.
“Whitefield police station received information stating that a mother and daughter had died at around 11 am. Police and SOCO teams visited the spot and found that the mother had smothered the daughter and then hanged herself. Two separate cases have been registered and investigation is ongoing," Bengaluru Police said in a statement.
At the time of the incident, Suvarna’s husband Chandrashekhar, who works as a medical assistant at a hospital, was on duty. Police said he had left for work in the morning as usual. When repeated calls to Suvarna went unanswered, Chandrashekhar asked a relative to check on the family. He later returned home around 11 am, when the incident came to light.
In a significant development, two separate FIRs have been registered—one filed by Chandrashekhar alleging that his wife killed their daughter, and another by Suvarna’s brother Manjunath, who expressed suspicion over the circumstances and sought a detailed probe. The bodies of both the mother and daughter have been shifted for post-mortem examination.
Family members indicated that financial stress may have played a role in the tragic incident. Suvarna’s sister Usha said the family had been facing financial strain in recent months.
“She was upset over financial problems and expenses. She used to speak to me frequently about money issues and seemed depressed about the situation," Usha said.
She added that the family had been struggling with medical expenses after Chandrashekhar recently underwent a heart transplant, which had placed additional financial pressure on the household.
“There was a shortage of money due to medical expenses. She may have become mentally distressed because of financial worries. But killing her daughter is very painful, and the truth behind this must be investigated," she said.
Police said the couple had been married for about 18 years and had two children. Their son is currently studying in a hostel in Tumakuru, while Karunya lived with her parents at their residence in Immadihalli. On the day of the incident, Suvarna was alone at home with her daughter.
Officials suspect that the mother first killed her daughter by suffocation and later died by suicide, but they have not ruled out other possibilities at this stage. Whitefield Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the deaths.
