A horrific accident in Madhya Pradesh has claimed the life of a 35-year-old man after a bridge suddenly collapsed. The man, identified as a former CRPF jawan, was returning from his sister’s wedding on Monday morning when the collapse occurred on the Nayagaon bridge along the Bareilly–Pipariya State Highway.

The bridge gave way without warning while repair work was underway beneath it. As two motorcycles were crossing, the collapsing section fell, causing the bikes and their riders to plunge. Four bikers and a labourer were severely injured; six labourers working under the bridge narrowly escaped, though one was hit by debris.

The man was rushed to AIIMS Bhopal along with the other injured, but succumbed to his injuries late Monday night.

In response, local authorities shut down the bridge completely and initiated a high-level inquiry. The regional manager of the state road development corporation has been suspended, and show-cause notices have been issued to senior officials. A three-member committee led by the chief engineer has been tasked with submitting a report within a week.

According to previous inspections, the bridge had serious structural issues including corrosion of reinforcement, debris build-up in expansion joints, and inadequate protective work. Though a repair worth ₹ 98 lakh had been sanctioned under a state scheme, the maintenance work was ongoing when tragedy struck.
