Multiple explosions rocked Ukraine’s capital Kyiv early Thursday after Russian forces launched an overnight attack using drones and ballistic missiles, injuring five people and damaging residential buildings.
AFP journalists reported hearing more than a dozen explosions in Kyiv’s central and eastern districts after Ukraine’s air force warned that ballistic missiles were approaching the capital.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that “Kyiv is under attack from ballistic missiles and UAVs."
Residential Buildings, Hotel Damaged
Klitschko said the attacks hit residential buildings across the city.
He said people were trapped inside a damaged nine-storey residential building, while the roof of another high-rise apartment building caught fire.
The mayor also said the roof of a hotel on central Shevchenko Boulevard was engulfed in flames. Images shared on social media showed fire burning on the top of the building.
In a later update, Klitschko said Kyiv had also come under a ballistic missile attack, with five people injured in one of the city’s central districts.
Residents were seen taking shelter in underground metro stations, with sleeping bags and pets, as air raid alerts remained in effect.
Zelensky Warned Of Overnight Strike
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier warned that intelligence reports indicated Russia was preparing another overnight attack.
He urged people to heed air raid warnings and be “especially careful."
“Today, we have information about another massive Russian strike – we have relevant intelligence data. And immediately after this conversation, I am returning to Ukraine. Today, I ask our people in Ukraine to be especially careful – stay safe and protect your families and children – be sure to take shelter and pay attention to air-raid alerts in Ukraine. We know that Putin has been preparing a massive strike against Ukraine for some time. That is exactly the threat we are facing tonight," the Ukrainian president said.

Speaking during a visit to Ireland, Zelensky said, “Putin wants to keep fighting. That is why he must face conditions that make it impossible for him to keep this war going."
Zelensky later cut short his visit to Dublin, where he had travelled for the start of Ireland’s six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Emergency responders continued rescue operations at damaged buildings as authorities assessed the impact of the overnight attack.
