In a bid to eliminate custodial suicides, the Mumbai Police has enforced a strict new safety rule: every accused who enters a police station lockup will now be given a special short, no-risk “uniform."
The first glimpse of the new system came at the Antop Hill Police Station, where theft suspects were produced in maroon half-sleeve T-shirts and black shorts, simple clothing with no loose fabric, no drawstrings, and nothing that can be turned into a noose.
The move stems from a disturbing pattern. Over the years, detainees have used everyday clothing, long shirt sleeves, pant legs, belts, even bedsheets to attempt or commit suicide. Between 2020 and 2023, Maharashtra recorded over 54 custodial deaths, many caused by hanging inside lockups.
Calls For Tougher Measures
One such incident that triggered tougher measures was the suicide of Anuj Thapan, accused in the firing case outside actor Salman Khan’s home. Thapan allegedly used a bedsheet inside the Crime Branch lockup, exposing how easily personal belongings could become lethal.
To prevent any such opportunity, police stations are now reshaping their lockup infrastructure as well. Bathroom doors are being modified, with the upper and lower sections removed so detainees cannot shut themselves in and attempt self-harm behind closed doors.
Recognising that people brought into custody may be anxious, unstable, or emotionally distressed, officers now hand over these “safety garments" immediately after arrest, ensuring that no personal clothing, even for a few minutes, can be misused.
The intention behind the overhaul is clear: remove the means, reduce the risk, and protect every life in custody.
