Heavy rain and gusty winds disrupted flight operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Sunday, forcing authorities to suspend runway operations for an hour, cancelling four IndiGo flights and diverting 13 aircraft operated by various airlines.
Runway operations remained suspended from 10.17 am to 11.17 am after strong winds of up to 42 knots and poor visibility made it unsafe for aircraft movement, airport operator Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said.
Services resumed after weather conditions improved, but the temporary shutdown triggered delays across the airport. According to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24, departing flights were delayed by an average of 75 minutes, while arriving flights were running at least 28 minutes behind schedule.
“At approximately 10.17 am, adverse weather conditions, including strong gusty winds of up to 42 knots and reduced visibility due to heavy rain, impacted runway operations. As per procedure, runway operations were temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of passengers, aircraft and ground personnel," MIAL said in a statement.
A PTI report said that four IndiGo flights were cancelled, while 13 aircraft operated by different airlines were diverted during the disruption.

A CSMIA spokesperson said runway operations were suspended at 10.17 am after heavy rain, poor visibility and wind speeds of up to 42 knots affected aircraft movement. Normal operations resumed at 11.17 am, with the temporary suspension lasting 60 minutes.
According to airport sources, four IndiGo flights were cancelled due to the weather, while 13 flights operated by various airlines were diverted. All diverted flights have since landed back in Mumbai.
The airport handles nearly 980-1,000 flights every day, averaging 48 aircraft movements an hour—24 arrivals and 24 departures—according to Air Traffic Control sources.
Data from Flightradar24 showed that 87 per cent of departing flights and 62 per cent of arriving flights experienced delays on Sunday, while around 3 per cent of inbound flights were cancelled because of the weather.
