A youth was rescued after accidentally falling into the Mithi River in Dahisar amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai on Saturday, as incessant showers continued to disrupt normal life across the city.

According to officials, the incident occurred in Dahisar West, where the youth slipped and fell into the swollen river during the rains. A team from the Mumbai Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.

The incident comes as Mumbai continues to reel under intense monsoon showers that have triggered widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls and disruptions to rail services across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Heavy rainfall since the beginning of the week has inundated several low-lying areas, including Andheri, Kurla, Sakinaka, Chembur, Santacruz, Goregaon and Powai, affecting both road and rail transport.

Water accumulation on railway tracks, particularly between Nalasopara and Virar on the Western Railway line and near Vikhroli on the Central Railway, delayed suburban train services, with authorities imposing speed restrictions at several locations.

In the past week alone, Mumbai has reported two rain-related fatalities. On June 30, 11-year-old Vihan Shrivastav died after a massive tree, uprooted by strong winds, crashed onto his school bus. Two days later, on July 2, 60-year-old Aslam Isak Shaikh lost his life after falling into an uncovered and unguarded manhole in the Chandivali-Sakinaka area, highlighting the dangers posed by the city’s monsoon conditions.

BMC Declares Holidays For Schools, Colleges

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also declared a holiday for the afternoon session in all schools and colleges on Saturday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall.

The downpour triggered multiple incidents across the city, including road cave-ins, tree falls and house collapses. Civic officials said 64 tree-fall incidents and eight cases of house or wall collapse were reported. Three people sustained injuries after a two-storey structure collapsed in Byculla, while no casualties were reported in a road cave-in incident in Bhandup.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis urged residents of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the Pune-Nashik belt to avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow official weather advisories, as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast to continue until July 6.
