Kittur police in Belagavi district of Karnataka shot a rape and murder accused in the leg after he tried to escape by attacking a constable with a knife on August 30.
The incident took place around 6 a.m. on the outskirts of Kittur after the police traced the suspect and went to arrest him.
According to Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled, Ramesh Kilari attacked Constable Sharif Dafedar with a knife and injured him in a bid to escape. “Kittur Sub-Inspector Praveen fired in the air to warn him. But the accused tried to attack the other police personnel. So, PSI Praveen shot him in the leg,” he said.
Both the accused and the injured police personnel were taken to Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences in Belagavi for treatment.
Mr. Guled has said that the accused was involved in 4 dacoity cases, 1 robbery, 1 gang rape, 1 arms case, and 3 other cases. He was named in 5 non-bailable warrants, which had not been executed, he added.
