India’s fastest man, Gurindervir Singh, has revealed how his father’s unfulfilled sporting ambitions became his motivation to succeed during a special conversation with Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt, released as part of the promotions for her upcoming film Alpha.

Introducing him as ‘the Alpha of the running track’, Alia asked when he first decided he wanted to become India’s fastest athlete. Speaking about his father’s volleyball career, which was cut short by injury, Gurindervir recalled how he would often hear him wonder what might have happened had he continued playing the sport.

Jab ek-do peg lagate the, toh bolte the ki agar main karta rehta game, toh shayad main aaj kuch aur hota (After a couple of drinks, he would say that if he had continued playing, perhaps he would have been somewhere else in life today)," Gurindervir said.

The sprinter, who recently clocked 10.09 seconds in the 100m, said his father’s unfinished dream eventually became his own. He added that after breaking the national record, the first person he called was his father.

Daddy ab batao kaisa lag raha hai? (Dad, tell me now, how does it feel?)" he recalled asking. “Kehre mazaa aa gaya (He said, ‘It feels amazing’)."

Gurindervir further spoke about how he grew up admiring his father’s medals and trophies and was inspired by photographs of him playing volleyball. Later, watching Usain Bolt’s world-record performances convinced him to take up athletics seriously.

Gurindervir also spoke about the sacrifices made by his family, saying his father was deeply involved in his journey and often prioritised his son’s sporting ambitions over his own needs. He fondly remembered receiving his first pair of spikes from New Zealand through a relative and treating them as a prized possession.

The conversation also touched on a difficult phase in 2024 when Gurindervir considered giving up. He said his father suggested he could return home and explore other options, but his mother encouraged the family to stay positive and have faith that the challenging period would pass.

Asked what changed before his breakthrough year, Gurindervir credited the support system he found after joining Reliance Foundation.

Main Reliance Foundation join kiya, jo bachpan se main chaah raha tha, woh mujhe idhar aake mila. Acchi weight training, accha atmosphere, acchi diet, yeh sab jo main lack kar raha tha, mere ko ek jagah par mila (I joined Reliance Foundation and here, I found everything I was missing since childhood — quality weight training, a good environment, and proper nutrition)," he said.

He also thanked Mrs. Nita Ambani for establishing the foundation.

The interaction ended on a lighter note as Alia surprised the sprinter with motichoor laddoos, one of his favourite sweets. Gurindervir responded, “Aaj poora khaunga (Today, I’m going to finish the whole box)," before presenting the actor with a jersey carrying the message “Follow Me".

The conversation was released ahead of the release of Alpha, directed by H. Shiv Rawail. The film, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, is scheduled to hit theatres worldwide on July 3.
