An Indian-origin British national was found dead at a hotel room in Patna under the Jakkanpur police station area under mysterious circumstances. According to the police, Ajay Kumar Sharma (76), hailing from Nalanda district of Bihar, had been staying in the hotel since January 18.
The police on January 26 received a call from the hotel management stating that Sharma had not been coming out of his room, and not even responding when the staff knocked on the door, said Rituraj Kumar Singh, Assistant Sub-Inspector-cum-Station House Officer (SHO) of the Jakkanpur station on Tuesday (January 27, 2026).
He said the police, along with the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, broke the door and entered the room and found Sharma lying dead on the bed. The FSL team collected evidence.
Mr. Singh said the body had been sent to the Patna Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. The deceased’s family members in London had been informed.
Hotel staff member Amit Kumar said Sharma left the hotel on Sunday (January 25, 2026) and returned around 4.30 p.m. He called and said he did not feel like eating and asked for some fruits. “So, I sent a boy to get bananas and oranges and delivered it to him. My shift ended, so I left. Then, around 9 or 10 p.m., Mr. Sharma asked whether the Wi-Fi was working or not. There was a problem with the Wi-Fi, so the boy told him there was a slight problem. After that, there were no more calls,” Mr. Kumar said.
He said that since morning on January 26, there was no call, and then the hotel staff knocked on the door, but there was no response.
“The driver who was supposed to take him somewhere then called and said Mr. Sharma was not answering his call? Then we informed the police,” Mr. Kumar said.
Police checked the hotel’s CCTV footage and the register at the reception. A suitcase was found in which information was gathered about his family members.
Police are still waiting for the post-mortem report.
