After the allegations of sexual harassment and religious conversion that emerged from Tata Consultancy Services’ Nashik unit, Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran on Monday said the group maintains a strict stance against employee misconduct.

“Tata Group maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of coercion or misconduct by its employees," he said. He added that “a thorough investigation is underway to establish the facts and identify all individuals responsible for this situation", stressing that “appropriate and stringent action will be taken against those found guilty."

Speaking on the harassment case, Chandrasekaran said, “Complaints and allegations emerging from the Nashik branch of TCS have been gravely concerning and deeply anguishing."

“Action has already been initiated against the accused employees, and the company is extending its full cooperation to the ongoing investigations," he said.

“This incident is being treated with the utmost seriousness. The complaints and allegations emerging from the Nashik branch of Tata Consultancy Services are gravely concerning and anguishing. Action has already been initiated against the accused employees, and the company is extending its full cooperation to the ongoing investigations," he added.

He said Aarthi Subramanian, Chief Operating Officer at TCS, will be leading the investigation. The Tata Group will take “appropriate and stringent action" against those found guilty.

The case has triggered wider scrutiny, with police launching an investigation and multiple FIRs being registered. It has also sparked debate around workplace safety and internal grievance redressal mechanisms in large corporates.

What Exactly Happened?

The case came to light after a woman working at TCS filed a complaint in March alleging that a colleague had maintained a physical relationship on the pretext of marriage. This triggered a police investigation, and FIRs were registered against eight more people related to sexual harassment and religious conversion cases, according to media reports.

At least seven people working at the company have been arrested. The action was taken based on intelligence inputs received by the Nashik Police Commissioner’s office. The arrested individuals have been identified as Asif Ansari, Shafi Sheikh, Shah Rukh Qureshi, Raza Memon, Tausif Attar, and Danish Sheikh, along with a woman whose identity has not been revealed.

At least eight women and a man have come forward to complain against the group operating in the company.

The complaint against them includes influencing them to eat beef and mock Hindu gods and goddesses, and in some cases, there are charges of sexual assault, as per an Indian Express report.
