Services on the Green Line of the Namma Metro in Bengaluru were delayed by around 15 minutes during morning peak hours on July 9 after a signalling problem disrupted train operations, leading to overcrowding at several stations and long queues of commuters.
The disruption slowed scheduled train movements across the entire 33.46-km Green Line, which connects Madavara in the northwest to Silk Institute in the south of Bengaluru. As trains operated at reduced speeds, platforms became crowded and passengers experienced delays while boarding.
Several commuters took to social media to express their frustration over the disruption, with many reporting packed platforms and a lack of timely information from metro authorities.
Praveen Kumar, a commuter from Konanakunte, said that the situation at Konanakunte metro station was chaotic. “The station was overcrowded for an hour, with passengers struggling to board packed trains. There was little communication from metro staff about the reason for the delay, or how long it would last. Better coordination and timely updates are essential during such disruptions,” he said.
A Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) official said that the disruption was caused by a train encountering a signalling problem at Konanakunte metro station. “One train encountered a signalling problem around 8.25 am. As a precaution, passengers were deboarded and shifted to another train so that services could continue. During this process, there was a delay of about 15 minutes. Subsequent trains were operated at reduced speed, which affected the overall schedule. Normal operations were restored within about 20 minutes,” the official said.
The latest disruption marks the third technical issue faced by BMRCL in recent weeks, following two significant incidents on the Purple Line in June.
On June 24, a snapped bolt in the third-rail power system near Cubbon Park station brought underground metro services to a halt for several hours during the evening peak period, with normal operations resuming only the following morning.
Two days later, on June 26, services were briefly disrupted after a passenger’s metal chain got lodged in a train door guideway at Cubbon Park station. The incident required passengers to be deboarded, resulting in a 17-minute delay.
