Tamil Nadu will have 100 additional MBBS seats this academic year. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has permitted the government medical colleges in Namakkal and Tiruppur to increase their annual MBBS intake by 50 seats each from the academic year 2026-27. Consequently, the total intake at each college will increase from 100 to 150 seats each.
According to officials, the increase will take the total number of MBBS seats in the State’s 36 government medical colleges from 5,050 to 5,150.
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board, NMC, issued the Letter of Permission to increase the intake of 50 MBBS seats (from 100 to 150) to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Namakkal, and Government Medical College and Hospital, Tiruppur, on July 10. This was after examining the application, assessment report, and other relevant records in accordance with the provisions of the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations, 2023, and Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment, and Rating Regulations, 2023, made under the NMC Act, 2019, and public notice inviting applications for the academic year, it said.
Both the government medical colleges in Namakkal and Tiruppur were among the 11 government medical colleges approved for the State during 2019 and 2020 and officially inaugurated in January 2022, with a combined annual intake of 1,450 MBBS seats. The colleges were established under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of “Establishing of New Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals”.
