National statistics day observed

Hubballi: National Statistics Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm to commemorate the birth anniversary of the father of Indian statistics, Prof PC Mahalanobis, and to remember his remarkable contributions to the field of statistics by national statistical office, Hubballi on Monday.Delivering the keynote address, Dr Nagesh S, HoD of Statistics, Karnataka University, highlighted the day as a tribute to the life and achievements of Prof PC Mahalanobis. He presented an overview of Mahalanobis' life, his pioneering work in statistics, and his invaluable contribution to the development of statistical science in India.Presiding over the function, Harishwaran, regional director, National Statistical Office, described Prof PC Mahalanobis as the architect of India's statistical system.

He stated that it is the responsibility of everyone associated with the statistical system to honour his legacy.Harishwaran also delivered a presentation on the theme “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data,” emphasising the importance of administrative data in evidence-based policy-making and governance.Dr Sharada Bhat, senior professor, Statistics department, said that Prof PC Mahalanobis elevated the stature of statisticians through his pioneering work.

She also highlighted the immense potential of administrative data in strengthening the country’s statistical system. As part of the celebrations, a statistics quiz competition was organised for statistics students.
