Jaylen Brown poured in 42 points on Wednesday as the Boston Celtics clawed back from an early deficit and then held off a furious late surge from the New York Knicks to escape with a 123-117 win at TD Garden.
For a Celtics team still trying to click with a revamped roster, the game looked headed for trouble when the Knicks burst out to a 14-point cushion early in the second quarter. But Boston flipped the script in a hurry, blitzing New York 37-20 in the period and taking a 58-52 lead into the break.
From there, the Celtics appeared to be cruising. A 36-point third quarter stretched the advantage to 18, and TD Garden settled in for what looked like a comfortable finish.
Not so fast.
New York detonated for 41 fourth-quarter points behind a scorching run from Mikal Bridges, who dropped 17 in the final frame, and Karl-Anthony Towns, who added 11. The Knicks trimmed the lead to single digits and had Boston sweating in the closing minutes, but Brown steadied the ship as the Celtics held on to move to 12-9 on the season.
“Just a great team victory all around," Brown told NBC.
“We started off slow, but that’s why there’s four quarters. We’re getting better every day. Don’t count us out — we’re learning and growing. We’ve got a new group and a bunch of young guys playing real minutes. I’m proud of what I’m seeing."
Bridges led the Knicks with 35 points, drilling eight threes, while Towns finished with 29 in the loss.
