Athletics Federation of India chairman Adille Sumariwalla has said that Neeraj Chopra is now training fit and is getting ready to compete in the next 10 days, with the latter named in India’s athletics squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, subject to fitness.

Chopra, who hasn’t competed since the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, has been recovering from a back injury and is yet to start his season.

Neeraj is, however, expected to return to competition within the next 10 days and has requested the AFI to take his upcoming performances into account for Commonwealth Games qualification.

“Neeraj has recovered from his back injury. He is now training fit and is getting ready to compete probably in the next 10 days or so. He has requested that he will be contesting in a couple of competitions before the Commonwealth Games and if he achieves the qualifying standard, he be selected for the CWG," Sumariwalla said while speaking to the media.

To make the team, Chopra will have to achieve the AFI’s Commonwealth Games qualifying mark of 82.61m in one of those events.

Neeraj is in Bienne, Switzerland, for a 47-day off-season training camp along with his long-time physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha and coach Jai Choudhary.

Alongside Chopra, the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh will also feature in the men’s javelin throw event after clearing the qualification mark at the Indian Athletics Series in Ludhiana on Saturday, June 13.

Chopra earlier missed the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham because of a groin injury he sustained while competing at the World Athletics Championships that year.

Last year, Chopra suffered a disc-related back injury during a shot-put training drill, when a sudden jolt on his left side caused a strain that limited his mobility. He withdrew from the June 19 Doha Diamond League to prioritise a full recovery.
