Negligence risk at Karond Metro site after truck overturns near 20‑ft pit

Bhopal: Bhopal Metro construction again came under scrutiny early Sunday after soil at a Karond worksite gave way and a parked truck tilted into a 15‑ft wide, 20‑plus‑ft deep excavation near private hospital, opposite the Nishatpura ROB.

The pit had collected rainwater overnight and, around 2 AM, the saturated ground collapsed beneath the vehicle, causing it to overturn. No one was injured, the truck was empty and no bystanders were nearby. Police reached the site and, with a Metro crane, righted and removed the vehicle. Locals said the incident could have been far worse during daytime, when the road is busy with hospital traffic and commuters from Fiza Colony.

Last week there was a gas leak at the same private hospital owing to a JCB construction work.Concerns over safety at the Karond stretches beyond this event. Previously an iron frame for a Metro pillar toppled onto a high‑tension line, triggering a power outage that was contained only after swift action by electricity department staff. The string of incidents has renewed questions about construction safety standards, site monitoring and safeguards around deep excavations in populated areas.
