An argument between a male nursing orderly (MNO) and a house surgeon triggered into a big fight between two groups of staff nurses and junior doctors, followed by a protest by the nurses at ACSR Government General Hospital (GGH) in Nellore on Monday (August 18) night.

According to the sources, MNO Venkateshwarlu asked a house surgeon to speed up the treatment at the Emergency Ward as it would be difficult in case if there was a situation where mass admissions happen. Resisting the advice from a nurse, the house surgeon reportedly attacked him on Saturday (August 16).

Later, orthopedic surgeon Shaik Masthan Basha tried to settle the issue by directing the MNO to apologise to the house surgeon. However, the junior doctors and PG doctors allegedly attacked the MNO on Monday during the night shift.

Condemning these attacks, the staff nurses staged a protest in front of the hospital demanding justice. Due to this protest, the inpatients at the GGH wards suffered for some time. After the intervention of the superiors, the nurses resumed the patient care services from Tuesday morning.

Speaking to The Hindu, GGH Superintendent K. Madhavi said that it was a minor dispute between nurses and junior doctors. A meeting was held at the hospital to resolve the issue. The house surgeons and nursing staff are currently doing their duty as usual, she informed.

“An Internal Complaints Committee will be formed to conduct a detailed inquiry on the matter. Based on the committee recommendation, a disciplinary action will be initiated on those who are responsible,” she added.
