The primary aim of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is to create entrepreneurs out of students and not merely job-seekers, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar said on Thursday.

“Is the aim of education simply to get a job? Am I to become a job-seeker? Or, am I to become a job-giver? That is what we have to decide,” Mr. Arlekar said addressing students of Guru Nanak College on the occasion of the institution’s 50th Graduation Day. Education imparted in institutions should reflect the learnings of the soil, he observed. This should go a long way in achieving self sufficiency and would contribute to nation-building, he said, adding that the NEP2020 was the first serious attempt to decolonise education in the country. Later, Mr. Arlekar distributed medals and certificates to students who topped their respective discliplines.

R.M. Ezhilarasi, Principal, Guru Nanak College, said that the institution was founded in 1971 with 450 students enrolled into three undergraduate programmes, which grew to 7,000 students enrolled into 28 undergraduate, nine postgraduate, eight doctoral reserach programmes, and over 80 skill-based and value-added certificate courses.

Present at the event were Manjit Singh Nayyar, General Secretary and Correspondent, Guru Nanak College, and Anitha Mallisetty, Controller of Examinations.
