Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday said that he had “never thought” about the possibility of becoming the next BJP national president and that he is only focused on increasing the farm production and farmers’ income in the country.
Meeting with RSS chief
Mr. Chouhan’s response came on questions regarding his reported meeting with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday. He, however, did not comment on the reported meeting or his possible candidature
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has entrusted me with the responsibility of looking after Ministries of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development. At this moment, agriculture is in every pore of my body and farmers are in my breath.I’m working towards increasing the agricultural production, boosting farmers’ income, developing rural areas and expanding the Lakhpati Didi programme,” he said, responding to mediapersons’ questions.
“Neither have I ever thought of it, nor has anyone told me. I can’t even think of it. I am the Agriculture and Rural Development Minister. I am doing this work like worship. Serving farmers is worship of God for me and I want to keep doing this worship,” Mr. Chouhan said.
The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister was in Gwalior on the second day of the All India Wheat and Barley Research Workers’ Meet being held at the Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwavidyalaya from August 25 to 27.
The name of Mr. Chouhan, a prominent OBC leader and Madhya Pradesh’s longest serving Chief Minister, has often been propped up among the top contenders for the post of the next BJP chief. The current party president, Union Minister J.P. Nadda, is on an extension since his tenure formally ended in early 2024.
The appointment of the next party president has been long overdue with reports from time to time attributing the delay to a lack of consensus between the BJP leadership and its ideological parent, the RSS.
