Bangladesh on Wednesday decided to observe August 8 as ‘New Bangladesh Day’, significant as this was the day Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the interim leader last year.
Following the student-led uprising, the Sheikh Hasina government fell on August 5 last year. Three days on, Yunus was sworn in to lead the government as Chief Adviser.
The government will now observe this date every year as ‘New Bangladesh Day’, a decision that has sparked intense reactions across the country’s political and administrative circles. The general administration division of the cabinet division issued a notification announcing the decision, local media reported.
According to local media reports, July 16 — the day when five people were killed in clashes between protesters and the police during the agitation last year — has been declared ‘Shaheed Abu Sayed Day’ to honour the memory of the student by the same name. He was allegedly killed in police gunfire at Rangpur.
The cabinet division issued separate notifications for the two dates. The notification states that all relevant ministries, divisions, and agencies should appropriately observe these days each year. These dates are classified under the “Kha" category of the guidelines for national and international day observances.
