New Delhi: Perplexity has officially unveiled its latest AI system, which is especially designed to function as a general-purpose digital worker. This latest unveiling is called Perplexity Computer, which comes as AI companies race to move beyond the simple chatbots, and it is built systems that can be independently handle the complex long-term projects.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has stated that the company has been working on the product quietly for the past two months. As AI models grow more powerful, they are also becoming harder to use effectively on their own.
Computer unifies all the current capabilities of AI into a single system. Perplexity Computer can do research, design, code, deploy, and manage entire projects. Rather than responding to the single prompts like a chatbot, it can also break a large goal into smaller tasks and assign them to different specialized AI models that will run at the same time.
A computer is a general-purpose digital device that operates the same interface that users do. It is a system that also creates and executes the entire workflows capable of running for hours or even months.
This system will divide the job into subtasks, which are handled by sub-agents that might carry out web research, draft documents, process data, write code, generate images, or connect with the external services. The coordination is automatic, and the work is asynchronous; users can focus on other things or run dozens of Perplexity Computers in parallel.
Perplexity Computer distributes tasks across the different models based on their strengths. Perplexity also believes this multi-model approach is essential as the AI systems become more specialized.
As models become more powerful, multi-modal orchestration makes the versatile AI harness the most powerful one; each of the frontier models excels at different kinds of work, so the full workflow must have access to them all. Currently, the system runs on 19 models, one of which focuses on the reasoning, while others handle coding, research, image generation, and lighter tasks.
Perplexity Computer is being positioned as more than an assistant that answers questions or writes short pieces of code. Once the user assigns tasks, the system splits them into parts, assigns each part to the most suitable AI model, and then combines the results into the finished output.
Perplexity Computer is now available to Perplexity Max subscribers in the Perplexity premium tier. It is also expected to be rolled out to Pro users at a later stage.
