As Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in New Zealand on Friday, he was welcomed with a warm message from his Kiwi counterpart, Christopher Luxon. However, it was an unexpected diplomatic gesture from South Korean President Lee Jae-myung that truly stole the spotlight.

In a post on ‘X’, President Lee lauded the bilateral ties between India and New Zealand as he extended his best wishes for the growth and prosperity of the two nations.

“Wishing for the friendship and progress of both India and New Zealand. Wishing for the friendship and progress of both India and New Zealand. Wishing for the friendship and progress of both India and New Zealand", he wrote.

President Lee also re-posted the welcome message by the New Zealand Prime Minister that also featured a video capturing the moment PM Modi arrived in Auckland on Friday, July 10.

PM Modi acknowledged the message with a gratitude note, saying: “Thank you President Lee Jae-myung for your kind wishes. Such thoughtful messages from friends are always cherished".

Luxon welcomed PM Narendra Modi with a brief message on ‘X’, “Welcome to New Zealand, Prime Minister @narendramodi". The post carried a video showing the two leaders warmly greeting each other and sharing an embrace.

PM Modi’s trip to New Zealand marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over four decades. The two-day visit is being held at the invitation of New Zealand’s Premier and is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation across many sectors.

Back in April this year, India and New Zealand signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The treaty spans across various sectors –– goods, services, and workforce mobility –– aiming to enhance bilateral ties and strengthen economic cooperation.
