Newcastle posted a 3-2 win over Qarabag at home in their UEFA Champions League second leg of the Round of 32 fixture to secure passage to the subsequent round of the competition on Wednesday.

Eddie Howe and co. added to their 6-1 decimation of the side from Azerbaijan, as Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Sven Botman all netted for the Magpies, while Elvin Jafarquliyev and Camilo Duran netted the consolation for Qarabag.

“I think if you look at the score over the two legs it’s been fantastic from the players even though today feels like a bit of a hollow win for us," said Howe.

“I thought at 2-0 we probably came off the pedal. We didn’t intend to do that but it was sort of the natural reaction," he added.

“In the second half the game became end-to-end which, for us, was a real shame. For one, we expended too much energy, and it meant we didn’t put pressure on their goal," the Magpies boss said.

Bodo/Glimt eliminated former UEFA Champions League winners and last season’s runners-up, Inter, with a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Wednesday, securing a 5-2 aggregate win. Goals from Jens Petter Hauge and Hakon Evjen outshone Alessandro Bastoni’s response for Inter, leading to Cristian Chivu’s team’s exit from the competition.

Bodo/Glimt had already established an advantage with a 3-1 win in the first leg at home, and they confirmed their progression with their performance in Italy.

Meanwhile, German giants Bayer Leverkusen advanced to the next round with a 2-0 aggregate victory after a 0-0 draw at home.
