Newly appointed SDM in UP's Shahjahanpur was made to do sit-ups publicly by lawyers after he reprimanded and punished individuals, including a lawyer's clerk, for public urination.

A newly-appointed Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) officer in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur was made to do sit-ups publicly on Tuesday after a dispute with lawyers.

A widely shared video on social media showed the IAS officer doing sit-ups before a group of people, believed to be lawyers, who were protesting the officer’s objection to them wearing shoes in his court.

The officer was identified as Rinku Singh Rahi.

According to the social media post, the dispute between the lawyers and the IAS officer escalated into a three-day standoff.

However, a report with India Today claimed that the dispute was regarding a lack of cleanliness, as Rahi spotted litter around the compound and witnessed individuals urinating in the open. He made the offenders perform sit-ups as a corrective measure.

Meanwhile, his action triggered backlash from a group of advocates present at the tehsil, who pointed out that the tehsil premises were also dirty and that he too should do sit-ups for that.

Rahi reportedly agreed to the same and performed sit-ups on the first day of his joining.

“I had earlier instructed people to use toilets, but some refused and continued urinating in the open, prompting me to make them do sit-ups," the report quoted Rahi as saying.

He also noted that some school children were found roaming around the premises without a purpose, and their parents were similarly made to do sit-ups as a form of public accountability.

Taking notice of the same, one of the lawyers was quoted as saying, “Today, SDM was inspecting the premises when our clerk was found urinating. He stopped him and made him do sit-ups. We questioned him on why he made our man do that."

The protest by the lawyers was eventually called off after Rahi’s public apology and symbolic act of accountability, the report claimed.
