Neymar’s pursuit of an elusive FIFA World Cup title appears to have ended in familiar heartbreak.

The Brazilian icon was overcome with emotion after Brazil’s 2-1 Round of 16 defeat to Norway on Sunday, collapsing to the turf in tears as teammates gathered around to console him at MetLife Stadium.

Whether Neymar has played his final World Cup match remains his decision alone. But as he buried his face in the Brazil shirt while teammates tried to comfort him, the images felt symbolic.

A Late Cameo Ends In Heartbreak

Neymar had entered the match in the 67th minute with the score locked at 0-0 after recovering from the calf injury that had threatened his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad.

His introduction initially offered Brazil renewed hope, but Norway struck twice late on through their star forward to seize control of the knockout clash. The second, a stunning long-range effort in the 90th minute, left Brazil needing a miracle.

That miracle never arrived.

Instead, Neymar’s final contribution came from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time after Leo Østigard was penalised for catching Casemiro with an elbow inside the box.

Neymar calmly converted before exchanging words with Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, but the goal merely reduced the deficit as Brazil’s World Cup campaign came to an end.

Another Record For Neymar

The penalty was Neymar’s 80th international goal, extending his record as Brazil’s all-time leading men’s scorer. He now sits three goals clear of the legendary Pelé.

Yet unlike Pelé, whose career included three World Cup triumphs, Neymar walks away without lifting football’s biggest prize despite leading Brazil across four tournaments.

A Career Defined By World Cup Heartbreak

Neymar’s World Cup journey has been filled with unforgettable highs and painful setbacks.

A serious back injury ended his 2014 campaign prematurely on home soil, Brazil fell short again in 2018, suffered penalty shootout agony in 2022, and now exits in the Round of 16 after another crushing defeat.

Sunday’s elimination also marked Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990, the first time the Seleção have failed to progress beyond the Round of 16 in more than three decades.
