Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones and co. pulls off $5.44M cap masterstroke quietly reopening door for blockbuster Maxx Crosby move

Dallas did not land Maxx Crosby when the Baltimore Ravens briefly appeared to have him. That much is clear. What is also clear now is this: the Cowboys just created more financial room on defense, and that will put Crosby right back in the rumor cycle.

Reuters reported Monday that Rashan Gary agreed to a pay cut after his move from Green Bay, lowering his cash figures from his prior Packers deal and helping Dallas reshape the cost of its front. That does not mean a Crosby trade is close. It means the door Dallas had cracked open last week did not slam shut. Jerry Jones already said he would not rule out re-engaging on Crosby, even while adding that he did not expect such a move because the Cowboys were already deep into free agency.

In Cowboys terms, that is not a denial.

Rashan Gary’s new number gave Dallas room, but Maxx Crosby would still cost real assets

The Gary move matters because it changed more than the headline. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Dallas lowered Gary’s 2026 cap number to $5.44 million and his 2027 cap number to $8.24 million by reworking the deal with option and void years. Reuters separately reported that Gary will make $16 million in both 2026 and 2027 after the pay cut, down from the bigger salaries in his previous contract.

That is the kind of accounting teams make when they want flexibility.

But cap room is only one part of this. Crosby is not cheap in trade value, and that is where this gets tricky for Dallas. The Raiders nearly sent him to Baltimore for two first-round picks before the deal collapsed after a failed physical. If Las Vegas was willing to move him at that price once, it has no reason to suddenly start taking discount calls now.So yes, Dallas is more capable of making another move today than it was a week ago. No, that does not mean Jerry Jones suddenly has Crosby in hand.

The Raiders are publicly moving forward with Maxx Crosby, which keeps this rumor messy

The other problem for Dallas is that Crosby is still a Raider, and for now, the Raiders are acting like that is exactly how they want it. Reuters reported last week that Crosby returned to the team facility after the Ravens deal fell apart. Albert Breer also reported that Las Vegas and Crosby appear to be moving forward together unless someone meets the Raiders’ massive asking price. That is why this rumor stays alive without becoming solid. Dallas has more room after the Gary adjustment. Jones has not shut the idea down. But the Raiders are not operating like a team desperate to move Crosby, and the failed Ravens trade only reminded the league that Las Vegas still values him like a franchise piece.
