The Cleveland Browns have not made a serious move at quarterback in free agency, and that has only added more weight to Shedeur Sanders’ position atop the room. According to The Athletic’s Zac Jackson on March 17, Sanders appears to be the early leader for Cleveland’s starting job after the Browns spent the opening wave of free agency focusing on the offensive line instead of adding another passer. That does not mean the Browns are sold. It means the market has stayed quiet, and Cleveland has not found a better option yet. That gap has already opened the door for trade speculation, including an A to Z Sports idea that linked Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy to the Browns for what could be only a Day 3 pick. That is not a reported negotiation. It is a theory. But it exists because Cleveland’s quarterback room still looks unsettled.
Shedeur Sanders looks like Cleveland’s QB1 for now, and that makes any outside trade idea harder to sell
Jackson reported that Sanders “has at least some runway toward being the starter” and added that Cleveland’s lack of quarterback activity can be viewed as partial support for a plan that gives Sanders the first real shot. He also wrote, “But let’s also pencil Sanders in as the most likely of the current group to take the race wire-to-wire.”That matters. Cleveland is not entering the offseason with a blank quarterback board.
Sanders started seven games as a rookie and, while the results were mixed, The Athletic made it clear the Browns still view him as a viable option in a room that also includes Dillon Gabriel and Deshaun Watson.
The bigger point is simple. If Sanders is already the early favorite on March 17, then any trade for McCarthy would not be a minor depth move. It would be another reset. Cleveland has lived in quarterback chaos for years.
Adding one more uncertain name to the pile does not automatically fix that.
The J.J. McCarthy idea says more about Cleveland’s uncertainty than Minnesota’s actual plans
The McCarthy-to-Cleveland angle came from A to Z Sports, which argued that the Browns could be a landing spot if the Vikings decide they have seen enough. The outlet pointed to Minnesota signing Kyler Murray and claimed that move showed where McCarthy stands. It also argued Cleveland could justify the risk if the price dropped to a Day 3 pick. That is the kind of rumor that grabs attention because the logic is easy to follow.
McCarthy has dealt with injuries and inconsistent play. Cleveland still does not have a locked-in answer. Todd Monken also prefers mobility at quarterback, and McCarthy can move.Still, there is a difference between a possible fit and an actual need. Right now, the stronger reporting in your dump is still the Sanders angle from The Athletic, later echoed by The Sporting News. Unless the Browns make another move, Sanders is not just in the race. He is out front. Throwing McCarthy into the mix might sound tempting, but it also risks turning a shaky competition into a louder mess.
