The Washington Commanders still have a clear gap in their offense, and it sits opposite Terry McLaurin. With only picks No. 7 and 71 across the first four rounds, the franchise faces a tricky draft board where premium receiver talent may not fall their way.
Several top prospects could be gone before Washington is on the clock, leaving the front office to weigh positional value against immediate need. That reality has quietly shifted attention toward the veteran market, where a more proven solution could be waiting.
A Brandon Aiyuk reunion could solve Washington’s biggest offensive need
The idea of pairing Brandon Aiyuk with McLaurin is gaining traction for a reason. Washington needs more than depth. It needs reliability, timing, and a second target who can consistently win matchups. Moe Moton of Bleacher Report put it plainly: "The Washington Commanders are the most logical match for Aiyuk, who played with Jayden Daniels at Arizona State in 2019. … Daniels and Aiyuk can rekindle their rapport at a time when the Commanders need a reliable playmaker to complement two-time Pro Bowler Terry McLaurin."That connection with Jayden Daniels is not just a footnote. It matters. Chemistry is hard to build in this league, and Washington is trying to accelerate a rebuild without wasting time on guesswork. Aiyuk, when healthy, brings polish and route discipline that young receivers often take years to develop. Moton added: "With a former teammate and an upstanding veteran [in McLaurin] who plays his position on the Commanders roster, Aiyuk would have the support and structure around him to be a productive, premier receiver in Washington.

There is risk, of course. Aiyuk’s recent knee injury and his complicated exit from the San Francisco 49ers cannot be ignored. He did not play last season, and durability will follow him into any negotiation. Still, the upside remains hard to overlook. This is a player who earned All-Pro honors not long ago and has already shown he can operate at a high level in a structured offense. Aiyuk inked a four-year extension worth a total of $120 million in August 2024.Financially, the situation is just as telling. As ESPN’s Nick Wagoner explained: "Keeping Aiyuk seems far-fetched for multiple reasons, not the least of which is financial. Aiyuk’s base salary of $1.215 million in 2026 is a relative bargain, but he’s still due a $24.935 million option bonus Sept. 1 that if exercised will be prorated through 2030 if he remains on the roster." He added: "That bonus is no longer guaranteed because the Niners voided his remaining guarantees last July after Aiyuk failed to participate in mandatory rehab sessions for his injured right knee. … For Aiyuk, the more likely outcome remains the Niners moving on whether it’s via release or trade."If that happens, the market could tilt in Washington’s favor. A one-year deal in the $12 million range feels realistic, and for a team searching for immediate impact, that is a calculated gamble worth considering.
