The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) began demolishing the top portion of storm water drains to match the existing carriageway level of service lanes on Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) at Sathuvachari near the Collectorate in Vellore. This was being done to provide more road space.
NHAI officials said that the existing service lanes were unable to accomodate more vehicles, especially during rush hour. It has resulted in traffic congestion along the route. Traffic snarls on both sides of service lanes became regular after allowing government town buses to use these stretches for the past few months. “After the demolition, new storm water drains will be built on par with the existing road level, especially near the underpass at Sathuvachari to prevent traffic congestion and accidents,” said a NHAI official.
