NHAI fast-tracks Haridwar projects ahead of Kumbh 2027

Officials said the corridor would provide vehicles coming from Delhi, Meerut, Saharanpur and western Uttar Pradesh with an alternative high-speed route before entering the city

Dehradun: Two major National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion in and around Haridwar ahead of the Kumbh mela next year are being expedited, with officials claiming substantial progress on both corridors.Officials said around 92% work on the 51-km six-lane access-controlled Spur to Haridwar project has been completed, while the 15-km Haridwar Bypass (Package-1) stands at 77% completion. Together, the projects are expected to allow heavy vehicles to bypass the city and improve connectivity for traffic heading towards Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh, easing pressure on Haridwar’s roads during the Kumbh. The Spur to Haridwar project connects the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor to Haridwar.

The route begins from Halgoya Mustkam and links to the existing NH-58 near Bhaderi Rajputana.Officials said the corridor would provide vehicles coming from Delhi, Meerut, Saharanpur and western Uttar Pradesh with an alternative high-speed route before entering the city.Similarly, work on the 15-km Haridwar Bypass has also progressed rapidly, with around 9 km of four-lane road already constructed. The bypass begins from Bahadrabad and ends near Chandi Devi Temple on NH-34.

Once operational, the bypass is expected to significantly reduce traffic pressure in key parts of the city, including Har Ki Pauri, Chandi Chowk and Shankaracharya Chowk. The state govt, in a communication, said, “Keeping in mind the upcoming Ardh Kumbh-2027, NHAI is rapidly strengthening road infrastructure in Haridwar. After completion of these projects, a major transformation will be seen in the city’s traffic system.

Currently, most vehicles entering Haridwar pass through the city, leading to severe congestion during weekends, festivals and religious events.”The statement added that the Spur to Haridwar project would divert interstate traffic before it entered the city, while the bypass would reduce unnecessary movement within Haridwar. In addition, flyovers, vehicular underpasses (VUPs) and service roads are being constructed at congestion-prone junctions such as Purkazi, Phaloda, Manglaur, Bahadrabad and Jwalapur on the Haridwar-Muzaffarnagar highway.NHAI is also implementing an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on the Haridwar-Muzaffarnagar, Spur to Haridwar and Haridwar Bypass routes. Officials said the system would enable real-time traffic monitoring, dissemination of information to commuters, enforcement support and quicker emergency response.“NHAI’s goal is to complete these important projects before Ardh Kumbh-2027 and provide a modern, safe and seamless road network in Haridwar,” the communication stated.
