The National Hockey League (NHL) has officially announced the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, marking the return of the international best-on-best tournament after more than a decade. The tournament is scheduled for February 2028 and will feature eight national teams competing across the three cities.
According to reports, the event last took place in 2016, when Canada captured the title in Toronto. Even in the other two best-on-best events held in the last two years, Canada won the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025, before the U.S. earned revenge with Olympic gold in February. Reports suggest that the 2028 World Cup will feature eight teams; however, Russia's participation is still up in the air. In addition to this, it is reported that an original group of 25 applicants will bid to host the tournament. The NHL has confirmed the World Cup of Hockey, but which cities are going to host the tournament?
NHL announces World Cup of Hockey 2028, multiple cities to host the tournament
The NHL has officially confirmed that the 2028 World Cup of Hockey will take place in multiple host cities. The league announced that the competition will return in February 2028, marking the first edition of the tournament since 2016.
The event is expected to feature the world's top hockey players representing their national teams in a best-on-best tournament. According to reports, the league is going to host the World Cup in Edmonton, Calgary, and the Czech capital, Prague, which will host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, the NHL announced on Monday. The round-robin will be split between Calgary and Prague, while the semifinals and final are set for Edmonton.
Announcing the same on X/Twitter, the NHL stated that Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague will be the hosts for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey! #WCOH”Meanwhile, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman visited Calgary, where a $1.2 billion event centre is slated to open in March 2027. After visiting the site, Bettman said, “I don't think there'll be a nicer building anywhere than that. It looks like it's going to be a spectacular, first-class, state-of-the-art arena.
I'm excited about it, and Flames fans will be excited about it when they have a chance to experience it."He further added, “It's going to be great for the City of Calgary to have this type of facility, which, in addition to hosting the Flames, will be able to host concerts and other events that don't currently come to Calgary."It is also reported that the Edmonton portion of the tournament will take place at the Oilers' home rink, Rogers Place, and games in Prague will be hosted at the O2 Arena, one of Europe’s premier hockey venues.
