Macklin Celebrini and San Jose Sharks fall to the Calgary Flames
The San Jose Sharks opened a pivotal homestand with a 4-1 loss to the Calgary Flames, a setback that could carry major implications in the NHL standings.
With the game tied entering the third period, a poor line change allowed Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary to score the go-ahead goal. Later, a turnover by defenseman Timothy Liljegren led to an insurance tally from Nazem Kadri.Even though San Jose outshot the Flames early on, they couldn't get past goalie Dustin Wolf, who stopped 34 shots. Macklin Celebrini was busy but didn't score, which is a bad sign because the Sharks' record drops sharply when he doesn't score.
After the game, head coach Ryan Warsofsky admitted that the mistakes cost them the game. He stressed that there isn't much room for mental lapses in late-season NHL games. Since January, the Sharks have given up more than three goals per game, which is something that needs to get better right away.Looking ahead, San Jose faces the Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets in back-to-back NHL matchups. With Connor McDavid and Connor Hellebuyck leading those clubs, the challenge only intensifies. If results do not turn quickly, NHL trade rumors surrounding pending unrestricted free agents could grow louder. For now, the Sharks remain within striking distance of a wild-card spot, but the margin for error is rapidly shrinking in this tightening NHL playoff race.
