The New York Rangers are entering the 2025-26 NHL season under enormous pressure, with many insiders warning that the team’s championship window may be closing quicker than expected.
Despite securing Igor Shesterkin long-term and building one of the league’s deepest young defensive groups, the organization is rumored to be weighing bold roster changes if early results disappoint.
One insider even remarked, “almost everything would be under consideration,” igniting speculation that blockbuster trades could be on the horizon.
Questions mounting over the Rangers’ star forwards and their long-term fit
The forward group remains the biggest source of uncertainty.
Artemi Panarin, who has been the engine of the offense since joining the club, could reportedly be moved if the Rangers believe they can maximize his value while retooling their core. Mika Zibanejad’s role is also under close review, with whispers of a potential position change to wing — or even a trade — depending on how the season unfolds.
Alexis Lafrenière continues to be the wild card. His flashes of brilliance last year have encouraged optimism, but opinions differ sharply on whether he is a future centerpiece or a trade chip whose value may never be higher.
Coaching expectations, cap flexibility, and replacing veteran leadership
Head coach Mike Sullivan has already set a demanding tone, meeting privately with key players to stress accountability and focus. However, the departure of longtime leader Chris Kreider — dealt to Anaheim earlier this summer — leaves a massive void in both leadership and scoring depth. Young forward Will Cuylle, who notched 45 points last season, is poised for a top-six role, but the Rangers may not want to gamble their Stanley Cup hopes entirely on developing talent. Also Read: NHL Trade Rumors: Vancouver Canucks push for middle-six center as trade market heats upIf the Rangers stumble out of the gate, no player appears completely untouchable.
